San Francisco
November 15-19, 2008
Jon and I had the opportunity to travel to San Francisco for a few days in November. This was going to be great... Jon was going to attend an all expense paid Adobe MAX conference. He would get to learn all of the new and exciting technologies about to emerge into the computer world, and he was going to experience San Francisco for the first time. Even better, I was going to get to travel to one of my favorite cities for only the cost of my plane ticket (and of course the cost of all of the fabulous food and drinks we were going to have!)
This was our first time leaving Julia overnight, and I was pretty anxious the weeks leading up to our trip. Grandma Char traveled to Indianapolis for 6 days to watch Julia while we were gone. I think she was in heaven. She got to spend 5 uninterupted days alone with Baby Girl without me constantly watching over her! I was quite busy getting ready for our trip. Aside from the usual laundry and packing one does before a vacation, I had to make arrangements to have a mini fridge/freezer in the hotel room to store my pumped breast milk, pack a cooler and ice packs to pack the breast milk for the return home, find the pumping room in the Minneapolis airport (thankfully there is one), make baby food, type breast milk storage/handling instructions as well as feeding instructions for my mom, type Julia's schedule, prepare instructions for Biscuit, etc. Thankfully, Jon was a huge help in all of the preparation. Luckily, the anticipation of leaving Julia was much worse than actually leaving. It was very nice being away for a few days, we even got to sleep in a little!
We had grand plans for our trip to San Francisco. We were going to eat and drink our way through the city. We had researched all of the great, local restaurants in the city and we had our list of places we were going to try. I had every breakfast, lunch, and dinner planned! I even found a chocolate shop that was supposed to have the best dark chocolate in the city(unfortunately, I couldn't find it once we got there.) We started our eating extravaganza as soon as we arrived at the new Indianapolis airport. We ate some amazing filet sandwiches at Harry and Izzy's, with quite possibly the best bloody mary I've ever had! So we continuted the day eating more food during our layover, and then went to eat at a local brewery once we got to San Francisco. Well, there was a wrench in our plans, because we both got food poisening the first night we arrived in San Francisco (and I will spare you the details!) We have no idea where it came from, it could have been from any number of food items we ate that day... red meat, chicken, dairy, seafood, who knows. Anyway, the last thing we felt like doing was eating fancy food, let alone, making any effort to get ready to go to a nice restaurant. The first full day we were there, it took every ounce of energy we had to leave the hotel room by noon to try and go explore the city. We made a quick jaunt through Chinatown just so we could see it (and Jon experience any 'real' Chinatown for the first time). We quickly walked through, I thought Jon was going to lose it with the smell of fish and raw poultry! We rallied and saw most of San Francisco that we had planned, and Jon enjoyed his conference, we just didn't get around to eating to all of the fabulous restaurants we were so excited to try. Oh well, I guess we just need to plan another trip to San Francisco, right?!

Jon forgot his sunglasses so we invested in some sweet ones from a street vendor. I am wearing mine above. |
